Shyness and Social Anxiety

Most children (and adults!) feel shy sometimes; it’s really normal to be a bit unsure when meeting new people or to feel anxious before a performance. When shyness starts to get in the way of a child making friends or participating in activities they care about, or if it starts to cause a child a lot of anxiety, it starts veering into social anxiety territory. The books in this category are likely to be relatable to children who feel shy now and then, or most of the time. They encourage children to be brave and to be themselves, ask a friend to play, speak up in class, and remember that they aren’t the only ones who feel shy sometimes (or often!).
Age range: Mid- to late-elementary schoolers, but much of the book is applicable to kids a bit younger with some extra parental support.
Evidence-Based Practices: Cognitive Restructuring, Exposure, Relaxation
Age range: Kindergarten through 3rd grade
Recommended for: This book is best for children with performance anxiety. Pilar is a ballet dancer, but children with anxiety about other types of performances (e.g., musical performances, theater, class presentations, sports) would also likely benefit from reading this story. It normalizes performance anxiety, which is an important intervention (i.e., there’s nothing wrong with you for feeling anxious about a performance), and it teaches strategies of breathing, visualization, and talking with a loved one.

Gustavo the Shy Ghost

Two Shy Pandas

Written by Julia Jarman
Illustrated by Susan Varley
Age range: Preschool through 1st grade.
Recommended for: A sweet read for children who feel shy in situations where they’re expected to make new friends. Provides the perspective that there are probably lots of other children out there who feel the same way as the child reading the book and who would love to play if the child were willing to take a risk and ask.
Age range: Preschool through 1st grade.
Evidence-Based Practices: Exposure
